Beneath the mountains the Piedmont extends to the fall line on the rivers—the east-to-west line of Augusta, Milledgeville, Macon, and Columbus. Along the autumn region, which is almost a hundred miles (one hundred sixty km) wide, sandy hills type a narrow, irregular belt. Under these hills the rolling terrain with the coastal plain degrees out to
